Change of Character
A potential-reversal signal (CHoCH) in which price breaks structure against the prevailing trend — failing to make a new extreme, then breaking the prior pullback pivot — warning the trend may be turning.
A Change of Character is the first structural crack in a trend. In an uptrend it occurs when price fails to make a new higher high and then breaks below the most recent higher low; in a downtrend, when price fails to make a lower low and breaks above the last lower high. Where a Break of Structure confirms continuation, a CHoCH is its opposite — the first sign that the sequence of higher highs and lows (or lower highs and lows) has been violated and control may be shifting.
A CHoCH warns that the trend's character has changed and a reversal, or at least a deeper correction, may be underway. Traders use it to exit trend positions, tighten stops, or prepare for a countertrend setup — but typically wait for a subsequent Break of Structure in the new direction to confirm the reversal rather than acting on the CHoCH alone. It often coincides with a sweep of equal highs or lows just before the break.
A CHoCH is an early warning, and earliness is exactly its tradeoff: it flags reversals sooner than most tools but produces more false alarms, because the first counter-break in a strong trend is frequently just a deeper pullback that resumes. It is more reliable when it breaks a well-tested pivot, occurs after a momentum divergence, and is followed by confirmation in the new direction. Treated as "reduce risk and get ready" it is valuable; treated as "reverse your position now" it whipsaws. It is inherently less reliable than a with-trend Break of Structure, for the same reason all countertrend signals are: it bets against the prevailing force.
