Day Trading

A style of trading where all positions are opened and closed within the same trading day, ending the session with no overnight exposure.

Day traders attempt to profit from intraday price movements in stocks, ETFs, options, futures, or forex, closing all positions before the market closes. By holding nothing overnight, they avoid the risk of gap moves caused by after-hours news or earnings announcements. The strategy requires active monitoring throughout the trading day and typically involves technical analysis, order flow reading, and rapid decision-making.

Day trading attracted mainstream attention during the 2020–2021 retail trading boom, with millions of new traders entering the market. The reality of day trading is sobering: multiple studies across different countries consistently find that 70–90% of day traders lose money over any multi-year period, and that profitable day traders are concentrated in a very small elite. Transaction costs — even with zero-commission brokers, bid-ask spreads and market impact are significant at high volume — eat into margins that are typically thin.

The SEC's Pattern Day Trader (PDT) rule requires US traders who execute four or more day trades within five business days in a margin account to maintain a minimum equity of $25,000. This rule effectively prevents most small retail accounts from day trading US stocks actively using margin.
