Diamond Hands

Crypto and retail trading slang for holding a position through severe volatility or losses rather than selling — the opposite of "paper hands."

"Diamond hands" originated on Reddit's WallStreetBets community and was widely adopted in crypto culture. It describes the resolve to hold a position regardless of drawdowns, fear, or external pressure to sell. The diamonds represent strength and hardness — not breaking under pressure. The opposing phrase "paper hands" describes someone who sells at the first sign of weakness.

The concept resonates in crypto communities where extreme volatility is normal — Bitcoin has experienced multiple 80%+ drawdowns since its inception, yet the long-term trend has rewarded holders who refused to capitulate. Long-term Bitcoin holders who bought in 2011, 2014, 2017, or even 2020 and held through subsequent crashes have realized significant returns, reinforcing the narrative that diamond hands are rewarded.

The flip side is that diamond hands can be rationalizing holding losing positions beyond reason — particularly in altcoins or projects with deteriorating fundamentals. The psychological commitment to "holding no matter what" removes the ability to cut losses when circumstances genuinely warrant it. In successful stories, diamond hands is conviction; in failed stories, it is denial. Like many retail trading concepts, the outcome depends entirely on whether the underlying asset ultimately recovers.
