Dividend

A cash payment made by a company to its shareholders, typically distributed quarterly, representing a share of profits.

Dividends are one of the two ways investors earn returns from owning stocks — the other being price appreciation. Companies that pay dividends are typically mature, profitable businesses with more cash than they can profitably reinvest in growth. The board of directors declares dividends and sets the per-share payment amount; shareholders of record on the record date receive the payment on the pay date.

Not all companies pay dividends. High-growth technology companies typically retain all earnings to reinvest in expansion, preferring to create shareholder value through stock appreciation rather than cash distributions. Dividend-paying stocks tend to be in more mature, capital-light industries: utilities, consumer staples, financials, and healthcare. Dividend payments can also be made in stock (stock dividends) rather than cash, though cash dividends are far more common.

For income-oriented investors, dividends serve as a reliable revenue stream that doesn't require selling shares. Historically, dividends have accounted for roughly 40% of total US stock market returns over the long run. Companies that consistently grow their dividends over time — the "Dividend Aristocrats" that have raised payouts for 25+ consecutive years — are often considered high-quality businesses with durable competitive advantages.
