Premium Over Spot

The amount paid above the prevailing spot price for physical precious metals — reflecting fabrication costs, dealer margins, and supply-demand conditions for specific bullion products.

When you buy a physical gold coin or silver bar, you almost never pay exactly the spot price. The premium over spot covers the cost of mining, refining, minting or casting the specific product, distribution, dealer overhead, and profit margin — plus any additional demand premium for popular products. A one-ounce American Gold Eagle might carry a 3–5% premium over spot in normal conditions; a one-ounce silver American Eagle might carry a 15–20% premium given its lower face value and higher relative fabrication cost.

Premiums are dynamic. During periods of high demand or supply disruptions — such as the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, which temporarily closed mints and disrupted logistics — retail premiums on silver coins surged to 50–100% over spot as physical product became scarce while the paper price remained stable or declined. This divergence between the paper spot price and the physical market premium is itself an important signal: rising premiums indicate genuine physical demand exceeding supply, a condition the futures market may not yet reflect.

Premiums also vary by product type. Refined bars from recognized refiners (PAMP, Engelhard, Johnson Matthey) typically carry lower premiums than government-minted coins. Building a physical precious metals position at minimal premium — buying close to spot during calm markets, favoring bars over coins where practical — lowers the break-even price and improves long-term return potential. The premium is a real cost that must be recovered before the investment reflects pure metal-price appreciation.
