Trend Exhaustion

A composite read that flags when an extended trend is becoming overstretched — combining stretched price channels, weakening momentum, and sequential bar counts that estimate when a move is due to pause or reverse.

Trend exhaustion describes the late stage of a directional move, where price is still advancing but the conditions sustaining it are deteriorating. Exhaustion tools combine several reads: a price channel or band whose outer edge price has stretched to, a slope or momentum that is flattening, and a sequential count of consecutive bars closing in the trend's direction that estimates when the move has run "long enough." When these align, the trend is flagged as exhausted and vulnerable to a pause or reversal.

An exhaustion flag is a caution sign, not a reversal order — it suggests tightening stops, taking partial profit, or watching for a reversal trigger rather than entering against the trend outright. The strongest exhaustion reads occur when price reaches an overextended band and momentum diverges and the bar count completes at the same time: several independent measures agreeing on the same fatigue.

Because exhaustion is a composite of agreeing signals, it is generally more reliable than any single overbought reading — confluence reduces false positives. But it shares the fundamental flaw of all countertrend analysis: strong trends routinely stay exhausted far longer than expected, and acting on exhaustion alone means fighting the dominant force in the market. It is best used to manage existing trend positions — where to trim or trail — rather than to initiate fades. Compared with a lone oscillator extreme it is more trustworthy; compared with simply trending with the move, it is the harder, lower-probability side of the trade.
