Wallet

Software or hardware that stores cryptographic keys and allows users to send, receive, and manage cryptocurrency — though technically the assets live on the blockchain, not in the wallet.

A crypto wallet is a misnomer in one important sense: it doesn't actually store cryptocurrency. The assets exist on the blockchain. What a wallet stores are the private keys that prove ownership and authorize transactions. The wallet generates your addresses (where others send you crypto), tracks your balances by scanning the blockchain, and signs transactions with your private key to authorize outgoing transfers.

Wallets come in several forms. Hot wallets (software wallets like MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, Trust Wallet) are connected to the internet — convenient for frequent use but vulnerable to malware and hacking. Cold wallets (hardware wallets like Ledger, Trezor) store keys on a device that is never connected to the internet, providing dramatically better security for long-term holdings. Paper wallets (printed QR codes of keys) are another cold storage option, though fragile and awkward to use.

Custodial wallets (offered by exchanges like Coinbase, Binance) hold your keys for you — convenient but exposing you to exchange counterparty risk ("not your keys, not your coins," as the saying goes). Self-custody wallets give you full control and responsibility. The choice between convenience and security is the central tension in crypto asset management, and the loss of private keys means permanent, irreversible loss of the associated funds.
