Momentum Wave (WaveTrend)
A heavily smoothed momentum oscillator — labelled Momentum Wave here and known in open-source circles as WaveTrend — that normalizes price's distance from its own moving average into a clean wave with overbought/oversold zones and a signal-line crossover.
Labelled Momentum Wave here and known in the open-source community as WaveTrend, this oscillator is effectively a smoothed and normalized version of the Commodity Channel Index. It takes the typical price, measures its distance from an EMA of itself, scales that by the average deviation, then smooths the result twice — once into the main wave and again into a signal line. The output oscillates around zero with overbought/oversold reference levels near plus or minus 60. Its double smoothing gives it a noticeably rounder, less jittery shape than raw RSI or Stochastic.
The two most-watched signals are crossovers of the wave through its signal line inside the extreme zones — a cross up from oversold is a potential buy, a cross down from overbought a potential sell — and divergences against price. Because the wave is so smooth, its turns are visually clear and its divergences easy to spot, which accounts for much of its popularity among crypto and futures traders.
The smoothing is a double-edged sword. It suppresses noise and produces fewer false flips than RSI or Stochastic, making its signals look cleaner — but smoothing adds lag, so its crossovers arrive later than faster oscillators. It is no more predictive than the CCI it derives from; it simply trades responsiveness for readability. In strong trends it stays pinned to an extreme like every other oscillator, so its reversal signals fail in exactly the conditions where overbought/oversold tools always fail. It is best used for divergence and for timing within an already-established trend, confirmed by structure rather than traded blindly.
