Distribution Phase

The third phase of the Wyckoff cycle in which institutional investors quietly sell their accumulated position into public demand at elevated prices, building a cause for the subsequent decline.

Distribution mirrors accumulation but occurs at market highs. After a sustained markup, the Composite Operator begins methodically selling into the public enthusiasm they helped generate. A Buying Climax — high volume, wide range, often a gap up — marks the point where professional selling first overwhelms the public buying. An Automatic Reaction follows as the exhausted buying dries up, and a Secondary Test of the climax high on lighter volume confirms that supply is now dominant.

The distribution trading range contains the same sequence of tests as accumulation, but inverted. Rallies back toward range highs occur on diminishing volume (demand is weakening). The Upthrust — a deliberate push above the range high that immediately fails and closes back within the range — is the mirror of the spring: it traps late breakout buyers and allows institutions to sell into their demand, completing the distribution at the highest possible prices.

Volume tells the distribution story clearly: expanding volume on down-bars and contracting volume on up-bars signal that supply is dominating. Once the Composite Operator has distributed their full position, there is no longer large professional demand to support price — and the markdown phase begins. Recognizing distribution early is one of the most valuable applications of Wyckoff analysis, allowing traders to exit long positions or initiate shorts before the decline becomes obvious.
