Wyckoff Method

A technical analysis framework developed by Richard Wyckoff in the early 1900s that interprets price and volume as the footprints of institutional supply and demand across four repeating market phases.

Richard Wyckoff was a pioneering stock market analyst who spent decades studying how professional operators — the large institutional participants who move markets — accumulated and distributed positions without tipping their hand to the public. He distilled his observations into a three-law framework and a four-phase market cycle that forms one of the most durable analytical systems in technical analysis.

The three Wyckoff laws are: the Law of Supply and Demand (price rises when demand exceeds supply and falls when supply dominates), the Law of Cause and Effect (the size of the subsequent move is proportionate to the size of the trading range that preceded it), and the Law of Effort vs. Result (volume represents effort; price movement represents result — divergences between the two reveal when institutional activity is present). Together these laws explain why markets behave as they do at structural turning points.

Wyckoff's four-phase cycle — Accumulation, Markup, Distribution, and Markdown — describes how professional money moves through full market cycles, often invisible to the retail investor. In the Accumulation phase, institutions buy from panicked sellers at depressed prices. Markup follows as demand exceeds supply and price advances. Distribution sees institutions offload their holdings to latecomers at elevated prices. Markdown completes the cycle as supply overwhelms demand and price declines. Understanding which phase is active helps traders align with — rather than against — institutional order flow.
