Fundamentals

The core financial metrics and qualitative factors that describe a company's underlying business value — revenue, earnings, cash flow, balance sheet, and competitive position.

Fundamental analysis evaluates a security by attempting to measure its intrinsic value based on the underlying business. Financial fundamentals include revenue growth, profit margins, earnings per share, free cash flow generation, balance sheet strength (debt levels, cash position), and return on equity. Qualitative fundamentals include competitive advantage (moat), management quality, industry dynamics, and regulatory environment.

Fundamentals-based investors believe market prices eventually converge to intrinsic value, even if they diverge in the short term. By identifying businesses trading below their intrinsic value — or businesses with better fundamentals than the market has recognized — fundamental investors aim to generate returns above the market over time. Warren Buffett, Benjamin Graham, and the value investing tradition are the most prominent examples of this approach.

Fundamental analysis contrasts with technical analysis, which focuses on price and volume patterns rather than business characteristics. Many practitioners use both: fundamentals to identify what to buy, technicals to determine when to buy or at what price. In very short time horizons (day trading, scalping), fundamentals are largely irrelevant since prices are driven by order flow and sentiment rather than business value.
