A method of evaluating securities by analyzing price charts, volume, and pattern history — operating on the premise that past price action contains useful information about future direction.

Technical analysis (TA) studies price and volume data to identify patterns, trends, and signals that may predict future price movements. Its core premise is that all known information is already reflected in the price, and that the collective psychology of market participants creates recurring, identifiable patterns. Rather than asking "what is this company worth?" TA asks "what is the price likely to do next based on how it has moved?"

TA encompasses a wide range of tools: trend lines, support and resistance levels, chart patterns (head and shoulders, flags, triangles), momentum indicators (RSI, MACD), moving averages (SMA, EMA), volume indicators (OBV, VWAP), and volatility measures (Bollinger Bands, ATR). Practitioners argue these patterns reflect human psychological tendencies — fear, greed, herd behavior — that repeat across different markets and time frames.

Academic research on technical analysis is mixed. Many individual TA patterns have not held up robustly to rigorous statistical testing after accounting for data mining. However, some concepts — particularly momentum (the tendency for recent winners to continue winning in the short term) — have significant empirical support. TA is most widely used by short-term traders for timing entries and exits, while longer-term investors typically rely primarily on fundamental analysis.
