Hash Rate

The total computational power dedicated to mining Bitcoin, measured in hashes per second — a measure of the network's security and the miners' collective commitment.

Hash rate measures the total amount of computing power the Bitcoin network is using to process transactions and mine new blocks. Each "hash" is a cryptographic computation, and miners perform trillions of these per second in a competition to solve the current block. The network's total hash rate is an aggregate of every mining machine on earth working on Bitcoin simultaneously.

Hash rate is a measure of network security. A higher hash rate means it would require more computational resources for a bad actor to perform a "51% attack" — taking control of the majority of the network's computing power to rewrite transaction history. Bitcoin's hash rate has grown by orders of magnitude over its history, from megahashes per second in 2009 to hundreds of exahashes per second today, making it the most secure proof-of-work blockchain ever created.

Hash rate is also a sentiment indicator for miners. Rising hash rate suggests miners are adding capacity — they are optimistic about profitability given current Bitcoin prices and energy costs. Falling hash rate (typically after sharp price declines) suggests some miners have become unprofitable and are shutting machines off. Hash rate rising through and after a halving — when block rewards are cut in half — is generally a positive signal about mining industry health and long-term network security.
