Proof of Work

Bitcoin's consensus mechanism in which miners compete to solve a computationally expensive cryptographic puzzle, with the winner earning the right to add the next block and collect the block reward.

Proof of Work (PoW) is the original blockchain consensus mechanism, used by Bitcoin since its launch in 2009. To add a new block, miners must find a random number (the "nonce") that, when combined with the block's data and hashed using SHA-256, produces an output beginning with a specific number of zeros. Finding this nonce requires trillions of random computations — there's no shortcut, only brute-force trial and error. The difficulty of the puzzle adjusts every 2,016 blocks (~2 weeks) to keep average block time at 10 minutes regardless of how much total hashing power is on the network.

PoW's elegance lies in its Sybil resistance: to participate meaningfully in block production, you must demonstrate real-world energy expenditure. This physical cost makes attacks expensive — controlling 51% of Bitcoin's hash rate would require billions of dollars in hardware and ongoing electricity costs, and even a successful attack would destroy the value of the asset being attacked. The energy consumption, often criticized, is precisely what creates the security.

Proof of Stake (PoS), used by Ethereum after its 2022 "Merge," replaces physical work with economic stake — validators lock up tokens as collateral rather than spending electricity. PoS is far more energy-efficient but relies on a different security model. Bitcoin proponents argue PoW's physical grounding in energy and hardware is more robust and censorship-resistant; PoS advocates emphasize efficiency and scalability.
