Setup

A specific set of technical or fundamental conditions that a trader identifies as a favorable entry point for a trade, based on a defined strategy with clear risk/reward parameters.

A trade setup is a repeatable, rules-based combination of conditions that a trader uses as a trigger to enter a position. It typically defines the entry price or zone, the stop-loss level (where the trade is wrong and should be exited), and the profit target — together forming the risk/reward ratio. A trader might look for a stock that has pulled back to a rising 50-day moving average, has a bullish RSI reading, and is trading above its 200-day average: that combination is their "setup."

Setups are the fundamental building block of systematic trading. Rather than reacting emotionally to each price move, traders with well-defined setups approach the market with a decision-making framework that removes ambiguity. Discipline in only taking high-quality setups — and rejecting marginal ones — is what separates consistently profitable traders from those who overtrade.

Setups come in infinite variety: momentum breakouts, mean-reversion pullbacks, earnings plays, gap fills, chart pattern completions, options flow triggers, and more. What distinguishes a legitimate setup from a rationalization for a speculative bet is that it must be testable — you should be able to look at historical data and assess whether the setup has produced positive expectancy over a meaningful sample size.
