Asian Session
The forex trading session centered on Tokyo market hours (midnight–9am London / 7pm–4am ET), characterized by lower volatility and JPY-pair activity.
The Asian session — also called the Tokyo session — is the first major forex session of the trading day, spanning roughly midnight to 9am London time (7pm to 4am Eastern). While Sydney, Hong Kong, and Singapore are also active, Tokyo's open defines the session's character and its JPY pairs dominate volume.
Volatility is typically lower than in London or New York because European and US institutional traders are absent. Liquidity thins, spreads widen slightly, and EUR/USD or GBP/USD often consolidates within a narrow range. This makes the Asian session popular with range traders but less suitable for trend-following strategies on euro and dollar pairs.
Where the Asian session is most active: AUD/JPY, NZD/JPY, USD/JPY, and AUD/USD. Australian and New Zealand economic data releases fall during this window, often creating sharp short-term moves. The ranges established during the Asian session are closely watched by London traders — the London open frequently features a violent break out of the Asian consolidation range, giving traders who identified the boundaries a clear level to reference.
