London Session
The most active and liquid forex trading session, running roughly 8am–5pm London time (3am–12pm ET), when European institutional banks and traders dominate global volume.
The London session is the world's largest forex trading hub, accounting for roughly 38% of all daily global forex volume. It begins around 8am London time (3am ET) and overlaps with Asian markets for a couple of hours before Asia closes, then overlaps with New York from around noon London time (7am ET) — creating the London/New York overlap, which is the single most active and liquid period in the entire trading week.
During the London session the major pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, EUR/GBP, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY) are most active. European economic data — GDP prints, CPI releases, ECB policy statements — land during this window and can trigger large directional moves. The major European banks account for a significant share of interbank forex flow, driving tight spreads and efficient price discovery that contrasts sharply with the quieter Asian session.
The "London fix" at 4pm London time (11am ET) is a key daily reference rate. Institutional investors who need to transact at a known benchmark price do so at this moment, and hedging flows related to equity market closes, corporate FX conversion, and fund rebalancing cluster around it — creating predictable patterns that experienced traders monitor closely.
