New York Session
The second-most active forex session, running roughly 8am–5pm ET (1pm–10pm London time), when US economic data, Fed communications, and dollar flows dominate the market.
The New York session opens around 8am ET (1pm London time) and overlaps with the London session until London closes around noon ET — creating the busiest trading window of the day. After London closes, New York volume drops significantly but remains higher than the Asian session, particularly around US economic releases and Federal Reserve communications.
USD pairs are most active during New York hours: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, USD/CAD, and the commodity-linked AUD/USD and NZD/USD. High-impact US data — non-farm payrolls (first Friday of the month), CPI, FOMC rate decisions, and GDP releases — almost always fall during New York hours and can trigger the largest single-session moves of the month.
The "New York close" at 5pm ET is an important technical reference point: the forex trading day officially rolls over, daily swap charges are assessed, and the daily candlestick closes. Many technical traders prefer New York close charts over midnight UTC charts because New York close candles capture the full behavior of both London and New York in a single bar, making them more representative of real market sentiment for daily-timeframe analysis.
